West Indies Alumina Cutting 762 Jobs In Jamaica

Russia's UC Rusal is cutting 762 more jobs at the West Indies Alumina Company in Jamaica as worldwide demand for bauxite stays weak.

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) -- Russia's UC Rusal is cutting 762 more jobs at the West Indies Alumina Company in Jamaica as worldwide demand for bauxite stays weak.

The company said it will eliminate the jobs by March. Just over 100 workers will be retained at the plant in the island's Clarendon Parish. The cuts were announced in a statement Wednesday.

Bauxite is an ore used to make aluminum and one of Jamaica's leading exports. But the sector has been hit hard by the global recession and the industry has cut hundreds of jobs over the past year.

Aluminum giant UC Rusal last year cut 250 jobs and closed plants in St. Catherine and Manchester parishes.
