UK Car Production Down 6.7 Percent

Auto production was down 6.7 percent in October compared to a year ago, the smallest year-on-year drop of 2009, an industry group said Friday.

LONDON (AP) -- U.K. car production was down 6.7 percent in October compared to a year ago, the smallest year-on-year drop of 2009, an industry group said Friday.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said October's output brought the total for this year to 801,000, down 38 percent from a year earlier.

The Society noted that the October figure compared to a weak month a year earlier, when the global credit crisis began to hit hard.

Sales in 2009 have been boosted by a government-backed program which offers 2,000 pounds ($3,300) discounts to new car buyers who trade in a car more than 10 years old.
