Goodyear To Close South Carolina Plant

Global tire maker says it plans to close its Spartanburg, S.C., plant and move operations to other Goodyear plants nationwide to improve efficiency.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Goodyear officials say they plan to close a South Carolina plant, leaving roughly 90 people without a job.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports the global tiremaker announced plans Wednesday to shutter its Spartanburg plant by year's end.

The plant makes retread materials for commercial truck tires.

Company spokeswoman Amy Brei says operations are being moved to other Goodyear plants nationwide to improve efficiency.

She says some workers will be offered jobs at other Goodyear plants, but most will be laid off. They will receive severance pay.
