Little Debbie Snack Cake Maker To Close Tenn. Plant

McKee Foods Corp. is closing a bakery that makes Little Debbie doughnuts and shifting the work to plants in nearby Collegedale, Tenn., and in Arkansas.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Snack cake baker McKee Foods Corp. is closing a bakery in Chattanooga and shifting the work to plants in nearby Collegedale and in Arkansas.

McKee makes Little Debbie doughnuts at the plant, which employs about 30 workers.

Company spokesman Mike Gloekler told the Chattanooga Times Free Press the plant employees were offered jobs in Collegedale. The Chattanooga plant was down to one line working one shift.

McKee bought the plant from Turnbull Bakery in 2004. The plant is on the market and McKee has a pending deal to sell it.

McKee employs about 6,000 people, half of them in the Chattanooga area.

The company's Web site states its Arkansas plant is in Gentry, in the northwestern corner of the state.
