Tenn. Tire Plant To Bring 440 Jobs

New Carlisle Tire and Wheel tire and inner tube factory to be built in Jackson expected to create about 440 new jobs, Tennessee economic development officials said.

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) -- A new tire and inner tube factory to be built in Jackson is expected to create about 440 new jobs, Tennessee economic development officials announced Tuesday.

State Economic and Community Development Commissioner Matt Kisber said Charlotte, N.C.-based Carlisle Tire and Wheel is expected to close on the new facility by late September.

The announcement comes as welcome news for Madison County, which had a 10.7 percent unemployment rate in May, up 4.5 points from the previous year.

"Carlisle Tire and Wheel's investment in our community will be a great addition to our efforts to grow the local economy," Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris said in a release.

Carlisle Tire and Wheel President Fred Sutter said in a statement that Jackson is "an ideal location for our new facility, more centralized to our markets with excellent expansion opportunities."

The plant will qualify for tax credits and jobs training, but officials did say how large the investment or the incentive package will be.

The tires, wheels and inner tubes to be manufactured at the facility are made for vehicles in the agricultural, all-terrain vehicle, golf, industrial, lawn and trailer markets.
