Northrop, Areva Break Ground On Virginia Plant

Areva and Northrop Grumman have broken ground on a 300,000-square-foot facility in Newport News that will manufacture large components used in the nuclear power industry.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- Northrop Grumman and Areva have broken ground on a 300,000-square-foot facility in Newport News that will manufacture large components used in the nuclear power industry.

Wednesday's ceremony kicked off a $363 million investment that will create 540 production and engineering jobs.

The joint venture called Areva Newport News will be located near the Northrop Grumman shipyard. It is scheduled to be operational by 2012.

Areva has operations in Lynchburg dedicated to the design and construction of nuclear power plants, and the manufacture and supply of nuclear fuel.

The project includes $3 million from the Governor's Opportunity Fund and $1.5 million performance-based grant from the Virginia Investment Partnership program.
