LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- All 15 of Michigan's U.S. Senate and House members are asking the federal energy secretary to give the state a sizable share of grants spurring the manufacturing of advanced batteries, electric motors and electronics.
The $2 billion in grants is part of the federal recovery program.
The Michigan delegation sent a letter Tuesday to U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu saying that Michigan is "uniquely prepared" to offer an American-led solution for lowering the nation's dependence on foreign fuels and auto emissions that contribute to global warming.
The letter adds that establishing a North American battery center in Michigan will "significantly improve" the federal government's ability to quickly move the country toward more electric vehicles.
