Mexican Auto Sales Drop 47 Percent

Auto industry officials say car production in Mexico plummeted 47 percent in April compared to the same month last year due to lower foreign and domestic demand.

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Auto industry officials say car production in Mexico plummeted 47 percent in April compared to the same month last year due to lower foreign and domestic demand.

The Mexican Auto Industry Association says the country manufactured 100,421 vehicles last month, compared to 188,090 cars in April 2008.

Domestic car sales fell nearly 38 percent from the year-ago month, while exports dropped 41 percent.

Exports to the United States -- the biggest market for Mexican-made cars -- fell nearly 40 percent.

Mexico is the world's No. 10 car maker and the auto industry is the country's biggest manufacturing sector.

The monthly figures were released Tuesday.
