Goodyear Plant In Tennessee Cuts Work Schedule

Tire and rubber company’s plant in Union City, Tenn., plans to cut back the seven-day continuous operating schedule to an eight-hour, five-day work week beginning July 6.

UNION CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plant in Union City has announced plans to cut back to an eight-hour, five-day work schedule beginning July 6.

The company in February told employees it would reduce the work schedule from a seven-day continuous operating schedule to a five-day schedule because of the economic downturn.

Last week, Goodyear asked its union members to consider buyouts, including 600 in the first phase of a three-phase plan.

According to the Union City Daily Messenger, the United Steelworkers local is holding meetings to discuss the matter.

The 40-year-old plant employs approximately 2,700.
