Federal Auto Recovery Director Tours Michigan Plants

White House official appointed to help communities hit by the ailing auto industry toured a plant in Flint where General Motors will build engines for the new Chevrolet Volt.

FLINT, Mich. (AP) -- The official appointed by the White House to assist communities that depend on the ailing automotive industry is in Flint and later in the day will visit the Detroit suburb of Warren.

Ed Montgomery toured a General Motors Corp. engine plant in Flint Friday morning. It's where GM will build engines for the new plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volt.

He was joined by Gov. Jennifer Granholm and U.S. Sen. Carl Levin.

Montgomery is visiting Michigan cities that have been hit the hardest by plummeting car sales. He was in the Grand Rapids area on Thursday.

Montgomery is President Barack Obama's director of recovery for auto communities and workers.
