LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Democrats in the Michigan House want to require children's toy manufacturers to report what chemicals are used in their products.
Sponsors said Monday the bills are designed to protect children from toys containing toxic chemicals.
State officials would have to draw up a list of potentially hazardous chemicals under terms of the legislation. Companies using the chemicals of highest medical concern would have to publicly identify which products contain them and explain why they are used.
Fines for noncompliance would start at $5,000 and would increase with subsequent violations. Extreme cases could result in products being pulled from store shelves.
A spokesman for House Republicans said lawmakers' focus should be on stopping job loss.
