TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- A new Kansas law taking effect next week is designed to attract firms manufacturing equipment for solar and wind energy production.
The new law will permit the state to issue up to $5 million in bonds to help such firms.
Gov. Kathleen Sebelius pushed the measure as a way to make Kansas a center of research and development for renewable energy technology.
Legislators passed a bill unanimously, and she signed it Monday. It takes effect April 16.
Companies will be eligible for the state's help if they expect to invest at least $30 million in Kansas and have at least 200 full-time workers within five years. Also, a company will have to pay an average salary of $32,500 to its Kansas employees.
