HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- The Connecticut House of Representatives has voted to ban the sale, manufacture or distribution of infant formula and baby food in containers made with Bisphenol-A.
Some studies suggest the chemical may be harmful to infants.
The ban, which also affects reusable food and drink containers with the substance, would take effect Oct. 1, 2011.
The bill passed on a 128-14 vote. It now moves to the Senate.
Republican lawmakers tried unsuccessfully to strip a portion of the bill that prohibits anyone from selling food products stored in a jar or can made with Bisphenol-A unless the container has a warning label.
House Minority Leader Lawrence Cafero says such a labeling requirement would hurt businesses already struggling in a poor economy.
