Caterpillar Restricts Mexican Travel Over Swine Flu

Heavy equipment maker has restricted its employees from traveling to Mexico, where it has six manufacturing plants and other facilities, because of the swine flu outbreak.

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) -- Heavy equipment maker Caterpillar Inc. has restricted its employees from traveling to Mexico because of the swine flu outbreak.

The Peoria-based company has six manufacturing plants in Mexico, along with other facilities. It said Monday that it notified employees that they should not travel to Mexico and any exceptions would require approval from high-ranking company officers.

Mexican officials say as many as 149 people have died from swine flu in the country.

Caterpillar officials also say the company has implemented parts of its emergency response plan and is monitoring the outbreak. Company officials say they'll let employees know the best ways to avoid developing the disease.
