Britain Plans Incentives For Electric Cars

Once the infrastructure to support it is in place, the government plans to offer cash incentives to encourage motorists to switch to electric cars, officials said Thursday.

LONDON (AP) -- Britain's government plans to offer cash incentives to encourage motorists to switch to electric cars, officials said Thursday.

But first, the government said it will work to build up an infrastructure to insure that electric car drivers can conveniently recharge.

Cabinet ministers Peter Mandelson and Geoff Hoon announced the government plans to offer incentives of up to 5,000 pounds ($7,500) to electric car buyers beginning in 2011.

By that time, the government hopes that an affordable range of electric and hybrid cars will be on the market.
