ArcelorMittal Fined $110,000 For Worker Injury

After worker's leg was crushed by a steel coil weighing nearly three tons, ArcelorMittal Tubular Products Canada Inc. was fined $110,000 under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

BRAMPTON, Ont. (CP) -- ArcelorMittal Tubular Products Canada Inc. has been fined $110,000 after a worker's leg was crushed by a steel coil weighing nearly three tons.

A worker at the company's facilities in Brampton, Ont., was using a lift truck to move steel coils on Dec. 11, 2007.

While outside the truck, a coil weighing 2.708 tons tipped onto the worker's leg.

As a result of the injuries, the worker's leg was amputated below the knee.

The Hamilton-based company pleaded guilty to an offense under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
