Medtronic Buys Ablation

Medical device maker said Monday it is buying privately held Ablation Frontiers Inc. for $225 million to expand its portfolio of treatments for abnormal heart rhythm.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Medical device maker Medtronic Inc. said Monday it is buying privately held Ablation Frontiers Inc. for $225 million plus future milestone payments, in a move to expand its portfolio of treatments for abnormal heart rhythm.

Ablation's shareholders have approved the deal, which is expected to close by the end of April. Carlsbad, Calif.-based Ablation Frontiers will become part of Medtronic's new AF Solutions unit.

In November, Medtronic bought Montreal-based CryoCath for $325 million, also adding heart treatments focused on abnormal heart rhythms.
