Hershey To Close Scharffen Berger, Schmidt Plants

Chocolate maker plans to close Scharffen Berger's West Berkeley, Calif., manufacturing plant and the San Francisco factory that makes Joseph Schmidt truffles.

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- Hershey Co. has announced plans to close Scharffen Berger's West Berkeley manufacturing plant and the San Francisco factory that makes Joseph Schmidt chocolates.

Hershey bought premium dark chocolate maker Scharffen Berger and trufflemaker Joseph Schmidt in 2005.

Hershey's officials say they will continue to produce both brands, but not locally.

A company spokesman says most Scharffen Berger chocolates are already made at a Hershey plant in Robinson, Ill.

About 150 employees will be affected by the closures, which will happen sometime this year.
