Amsted Rail To Cut Over 300 Jobs In Illinois

Steel company says it will lay off 363 employees at its mill in Granite City beginning Feb. 16.

GRANITE CITY, Ill. (AP) -- More layoffs are set to hit Granite City in southern Illinois.

Not long after United States Steel Corp. announced it would close it's Granite City Works, putting 2,100 people out of work, another steel company says it will lay off 363 employees.

Amsted Rail steel foundry filed notice last month with the Madison County Employment and Training Department that it would make the job cuts. The layoffs begin Feb. 16.

The 31,000-resident community has been largely defined by steel mills and known for the thick, pungent odors they generate.
