DETROIT (AP) -- United Auto Workers union President Ron Gettelfinger says he's hopeful that an agreement will be reached soon in Washington to rush short-term loans to the struggling U.S. auto companies.
Gettelfinger told WWJ-AM in Detroit on Tuesday morning the union is "hopeful that the Democrats and the White House can come to a compromise here very quickly."
Gettelfinger says the union is focused on making sure a loan agreement is reached so the industry can move forward.
A federal "car czar" would oversee a government-run restructuring of U.S. auto companies in return for a $15 billion bailout of the industry under an emerging deal between the White House and Congress.
A vote on a package could come as early as Wednesday.
