Syracuse China Factory Closing After 137 Years

Parent company, Libbey Inc., is closing Syracuse China’s 137-year-old ceramic dinnerware factory in March, eliminating 275 jobs.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- Syracuse China is another victim of the slumping economy.

The 137-year-old company will close its Syracuse ceramic dinnerware factory in March, eliminating 275 jobs.

Parent company, Libbey Inc., says it needs to cut costs and improve efficiency. Libbey says the Syracuse factory is underperforming financially, although company officials declined to give any details about the Syracuse China operation.

The Toledo, Ohio-based Libbey also will close a glassware distribution center in Mira Loma, Calif., by May. The center employs 30 people.

Libbey has 7,400 employees worldwide, including about 3,000 in the United States.

Libbey said it will continue to sell china under the Syracuse China name. The products will be imported from factories in other countries.
