Scania Temporarily Halts Truck Production

Swedish truckmaker on Wednesday said it will suspend its truck production in Europe for one month because of a drop in orders.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -- Swedish truckmaker Scania AB on Wednesday said it will halt its truck production in Europe for one month because of a drop in orders.

Scania's spokesman Hans-Ake Danielsson said five plants and around 9,000 of Scania's 11,800 production staff will be affected by the temporary closure. The stoppage will run from Dec. 19 to Jan. 19, including public holidays.

Three of the plants are in Sweden and the other two are in France and in the Netherlands.

Danielsson said falling order intake, which has dropped about 50 percent in the past nine months, was the main reason for the stoppage.

"We don't want to build up stock," he said.
