Pratt & Whitney Orders Holiday Furlough

Jet engine maker is ordering 1,000 hourly employees in Connecticut to take a one-day unpaid furlough on Christmas Eve.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Pratt & Whitney is ordering 1,000 hourly employees in Connecticut to take a one-day unpaid furlough on Christmas Eve.

The move comes just a week after the jet engine manufacturer announced the layoffs of about 350 salaried employees across the country.

Spokeswoman Jennifer Whitlow says furlough is a result of work volume reductions in the aerospace industry and is designed to help prevent further job cuts.

She says the move only affects 1,000 of the company's approximately 12,000 Connecticut employees.

Pratt & Whitney is a subsidiary of Hartford-based United Technologies Corp. UTC's stock closed trading Tuesday at $47.97, down 68 cents.
