Palm Names Jeffries As CFO

Smart-phone maker said on Monday that its new chief financial officer would be Douglas C. Jeffries, previously chief accounting officer at eBay Inc.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. (AP) -- Smart-phone maker Palm Inc. said on Monday that its new chief financial officer would be Douglas C. Jeffries, previously chief accounting officer at eBay Inc.

Jeffries will start his new job Jan. 7.

Palm said current CFO Andy Brown will stay with the company through January. A prepared statement issued by the company quoted him as saying, "the time is right for me to pursue other interests."

Jeffries has also held financial and technology roles at GenCorp Inc., Red Herring Communications and Cardinal Health Inc.

Palm has struggled lately against competition from Research in Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry and Apple Inc.'s iPhone. Earlier this month it said it expects revenue for its fiscal second quarter to come in below Wall Street expectations, and said it plans to cut quarterly expenses and reduce the size of its staff.

Palm shares lost 31 cents, or 13 percent, at $1.99 in Monday's regular session, gaining 6 cents in after-hours trading.
