Ford: GM, Chrysler Can't Go Bankrupt

Chief Executive Alan Mulally says a bankruptcy filing by General Motors or Chrysler would drag Ford and industry suppliers into bankruptcy.

DETROIT (AP) -- Ford Chief Executive Alan Mulally says a bankruptcy filing by General Motors or Chrysler would drag his company and industry suppliers into bankruptcy.

Mulally reiterated Monday on WJR-AM's "Paul W. Smith Show" in Detroit that Dearborn, Mich.-based Ford Motor Co. believes it has "sufficient liquidity" to manage its business through the current recession without government support.

But Mulally says a bankruptcy filing by General Motors Corp. or Chrysler LLC would start a chain of events "devastating to the U.S. economy."

Sen. Chris Dodd said Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America" that overhauling the top management of Ford, Chrysler and General Motors is necessary as a gesture of good faith with the American public.

Mulally said in the interview he will serve as long as Ford's board wants.
