Chrysler President ‘Optimistic’ On UAW Offer

President of Chrysler says the United Auto Workers' willingness to change the union's contract is a good step towards helping the Detroit Three survive.

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- The president of Chrysler says the United Auto Workers' willingness to change the union's contract is a good step.

Chrysler LLC President Tom LaSorda said during a Toledo rally for the industry on Wednesday that both sides need to go back and review the entire framework of the contract.

He was responding to comments earlier in the day from UAW President Ron Gettelfinger that the union would be willing to return to the bargaining table with Chrysler, General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. to make changes.

LaSorda says if the union would surrender job security protections it would help the Detroit Three in the long run.

Local political leaders and several hundred Chrysler workers were on hand for the rally at a plant that makes Jeep Wranglers.
