American Railcar Plant To Stay Open Through Holiday

Railcar maker's plant in Arkansas that warned it could lay off up to 600 workers this month said it should have enough work to stay open through Christmas.

PARAGOULD, Ark. (AP) — An American Railcar Industries plant that in October warned employees it could lay off up to 600 workers this month said Monday it should have enough work to stay open through Christmas.

Under federal law, the plant was required to give workers 60 days' notice of possible layoffs. The notices were posted in mid-October.

Plant spokesman Dean Inman said Monday sales teams were "trying to find customers to fill the track space every day." He said if new orders aren't placed soon, the St. Charles, Mo.-based company would likely find the need to lay off workers.

Workers at Paragould manufacture and assemble covered hopper railcars. American Railcar has 570 employees at a Marmaduke, Ark., tank car plant. Inman said in October the Marmaduke plant will continue to expand and will be able to take on some of the Paragould workers if there is a layoff.
