Pfizer Asked To Reconsider Foreign Workers Plan

Connecticut lawmakers are asking Pfizer to reconsider plans to hire foreign workers to replace some local contractors at its campuses in New London and Groton.

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) -- Sen. Christopher Dodd and Congressman Joe Courtney of Connecticut are asking Pfizer Inc. to reconsider plans to hire foreign workers to replace some local contractors at its campuses in New London and Groton.

Dodd and Courtney wrote to Pfizer Chairman and Chief Executive Jeffrey Kindler on Monday to say they were concerned about local workers losing their jobs. Pfizer's research and development headquarters are in the two southeastern Connecticut towns.

The Day of New London reports that Pfizer plans to transfer some information technology contract work to outside companies, and the company has been training foreign workers in Connecticut over the past few months.

New York-based Pfizer says it continues to look for efficiencies because of global business challenges, but its commitment to the state remains strong.
