Maine Paper Company Laying Off 250

NewPage paper company says it will temporarily lay off about 250 employees at its Rumford mill starting Dec. 8.

RUMFORD, Maine (AP) -- NewPage paper company says it will lay off about 250 employees at its Rumford mill starting Dec. 8.

Market-driven layoffs are also affecting NewPage mills in other states. In Rumford, paperworkers union Local 900 President Gary Hemingway estimates that 250 to 270 workers will be affected by the layoffs, which will run through early January.

Hemingway says some of the other paper mills in Maine, including Verso and SAPPI, are also experiencing downtime.
