IBM Laying Off 100 Temp Workers

Company is confirming it has laid off 100 temporary manufacturing employees at its Essex Junction, Vt., plant.

ESSEX, Vt. (AP) -- IBM is confirming it has laid off 100 temporary manufacturing employees at its Essex Junction plant.

Plant Spokesman Jeff Couture said Wednesday that contracts had not been renewed for the supplemental employees, who had worked at the plant for one to three years.

He said the layoffs would not affect the permanent work force. It's the second round of layoffs in five months at the semiconductor plant. In June, the plant laid off 180 workers, including 70 short-term employees, dropping the employee tally to about 5,400, the lowest in more than two decades.

The company also will cut pay for some assembly line workers by up to 10 percent next year.
