Boeing, Engineers Contract Talks May Run Long

Contract talks covering more than 20,000 of Chicago-based Boeing's engineers, scientists and technical workers could extend beyond Tuesday.

SEATTLE (AP) -- Contract talks covering more than 20,000 of Chicago-based Boeing's engineers, scientists and technical workers could extend beyond Tuesday.

Boeing and the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace confirmed on Friday that a revised timetable is possible. Both sides previously said they expected to be done by Tuesday.

The union's two contracts expire Dec. 1. About 550 of the affected workers are in Utah, California and Oregon, and the rest are in the Seattle area.

Boeing's initial offer was presented Thursday, and SPEEA (SPEE'-uh) Executive Director Ray Goforth said it's disappointing. The union is set to present a counterproposal.

Boeing is working to resume commercial airplane production following an eight-week Machinists union strike that ended last weekend.
