Virginia Shipyard, Union Reach Agreement

Leaders of the union representing 8,000 hourly workers at the Newport News shipyard say they have tentatively agreed on a contract.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- Leaders of the union representing 8,000 hourly workers at the Newport News shipyard say they have tentatively agreed on a contract.

The agreement announced Saturday comes one day before the current contract with United Steelworkers Local 8888 is set to expire.

Rank and file will vote on the proposal Sunday at Hampton University.

The Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipyard is one of the biggest employers in Hampton Roads. It is the Navy's only builder of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.

While details of the contract were not released, union leaders said it will increase wages, improve pension income and will deliver other improvements over its four-year life.
