UAW ‘Unhappy’ With GM-Chrysler Merger Talk

United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger says talk of a merger between GM and Chrysler has workers concerned about their future after dedicating their lives to the corporations.

DETROIT (AP) -- United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger says he's unhappy with the talk of a merger between General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC and says workers are concerned about their future after dedicating their lives to the corporations.

Gettelfinger, who spoke Tuesday morning on WJR-AM's "Paul W. Smith Show," says the UAW supported Chrysler's combination with Daimler-Benz AG a decade ago and as well as their break-up last year. This time, he says, the union's "patience has gotten pretty thin."

GM has been talking with Chrysler owner Cerberus Capital Management LP about acquiring the struggling automaker. If consummated, GM likely would close factories, lay off thousands of workers and perhaps even close Chrysler's headquarters in suburban Auburn Hills.
