Oregon Company Fined For Illegal Tractor Imports

Prosecutors say Lenar Equipment illegally imported tractors from China; company is believed to be the first prosecuted criminally for violating a new Clean Air Act regulation.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Prosecutors say an Oregon company that illegally imported tractors from China is believed to be the first prosecuted criminally for violating a new Clean Air Act regulation.

The U.S. attorney's office in Oregon says Lenar Equipment Inc. pleaded guilty on Thursday to knowingly importing 10 tractors that violated a new provision dealing with manufacturing and importing engines that don't comply with emissions standards.

U.S. District Judge Ancer L. Haggerty sentenced the company to three years on probation, imposed a $10,000 fine, and ordered the company to pay an additional $10,000 to the state environmental fund.

The tractors will be forfeited.
