OPEC Pushes Up Extraordinary Meeting

Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries says it is moving up the date for an extraordinary meeting initially scheduled for mid-November to October 24.

VIENNA, Austria (AP) -- The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries says it is moving up the date for an extraordinary meeting initially scheduled for mid-November. The meeting is going to be held at the end of next week.

Vienna-based OPEC says the meeting originally slated for Nov. 18 will now be held Oct. 24 at its headquarters in the Austrian capital.

OPEC said in a statement Thursday the decision comes after consultations between its secretary general, the president of the OPEC Conference and other ministers.

No reason for the date change was given in the statement but it appeared the rapidly declining oil prices could be a reason.
