Daimler's September Sales Fall 3 Percent

German automaker said sales for its Mercedes Benz brand fell 3 percent, although it booked a 4 percent gain in car sales for the first nine months of the year.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- Carmaker Daimler AG Tuesday said sales for its Mercedes Benz brand fell 3 percent in September, although the company booked a 4 percent gain in car sales for the first nine months of the year.

Stuttgart-based Daimler said it sold 110,700 Mercedes-Benz brand cars worldwide in September, down from the 114,100 in the same month a year ago. The Mercedes-Benz brand includes the compact Smart models as well as the super-luxury Maybach cars.

In the first nine months of 2008, Mercedes Benz sold 979,800 units compared with the 942,300 cars in the year ago period.

Shares of Daimler rose almost 3 percent to 28 euros ($37.80) in Frankfurt afternoon trading.
