Alcoa Cutting Upstate NY Jobs

Aluminum maker is cutting about 100 jobs from its northern New York plant in Massena.

MASSENA, N.Y. (AP) -- Aluminum maker Alcoa Inc. is cutting about 100 jobs from its northern New York plant.

The company says the job reductions in Massena -- near the Canadian border about 160 miles northeast of Syracuse -- are part of a companywide effort to reduce costs because of plummeting aluminum prices.

Aluminum prices dropped from $3,300 per ton in July to about $2,150 today.

Alcoa says the cuts will be gradual and will involve attrition where possible. The company recently announced about 115 job cuts in Tennessee and about 600 in Texas.
