AbitibiBowater To Temporarily Shut Down S.C. Plant

Papermaker says it will temporarily shut down its plant in Catawba, S.C., the week of Christmas because of decreasing demand.

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) -- Papermaker AbitibiBowater says it will temporarily shut down its Catawba plant in York County the week of Christmas because of decreasing demand.

Plant human resources manager Barry Baker told The Herald of Rock Hill that company officials met with union leaders and employees Thursday to discuss the nine-day shutdown from Dec. 24 to Jan. 1.

Baker says inventories are up industrywide and the economic slowdown has decreased demand for newsprint and other paper products.

Baker says the plant's 940 employees can use holiday pay, vacation time or other paid time off to get paid while the plant is closed.

AbitibiBowater was created from U.S. newsprint maker Bowater Inc.'s 2007 acquisition of Canadian forest products company Abitibi-Consolidated LLC.
