Strange Smell Forces Campbell Soup Asia Recall

Campbell Soup Asia Ltd. recalled 330,000 cans of soup in Hong Kong and Macau after fielding complaints that some cans emitted an 'objectionable smell.'

HONG KONG (AP) -- Campbell Soup Asia Ltd. has recalled 330,000 cans of soup in Hong Kong and Macau after fielding complaints that some cans emitted an "objectionable smell," the company said Friday.

It is the first time Campbell has called back products from markets in Asia, Campbell commercial director Heidi Nam said through a spokeswoman.

The recall covered cans of condensed cream of mushroom soup and creamy chicken mushroom soup manufactured in Malaysia, Nam said. All cans were exclusively distributed in Hong Kong and Macau, she said.

A "small number of cans had an objectionable smell" when they were opened, Campbell said in a statement.

"We have no evidence to indicate that these products present a health or safety risk," the company said.

Hong Kong's Center for Food Safety said Thursday it was conducting tests and warned consumers not to eat the two varieties of recalled soup as a precaution.

Campbell Soup Asia is a subsidiary of Campbell Soup Co. based in Camden, New Jersey.
