Report: Ford, GM Laying Off Workers In Spain

National news agency Efe says Ford Motor and General Motors plan to lay off 1,900 auto workers in Spain.

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- A news agency says Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. plan to lay off 1,900 auto workers in Spain.

The national news agency Efe says GM plans to lay off 600 of 7,500 workers at its Figuerelas plant in northeast Zaragoza province for one year, due to sluggish demand.

Efe also says Ford wants to lay off 1,300 of its 7,000 workers in Almussafes in Valencia for the same reason.

The agency cited union representatives at both plants for its report Tuesday.

Calls to the unions and the companies went unanswered.
