PPG Industries To Buy BASF Unit

Company said Thursday it agreed to acquire BASF’s North American coil and extrusion coatings business for undisclosed terms.

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- PPG Industries Inc. said Thursday it agreed to buy BASF Corp.'s North American coil and extrusion coatings business for undisclosed terms.

The deal does not include the coil and extrusion coatings businesses of BASF SE in Europe, South America and Asia, the company said.

BASF's North American coil and extrusion coatings business serves the construction, appliance, transportation, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, lighting fixture and extrusion industries.

The business, which employs about 200 people, operates manufacturing sites in Decatur, Ala., and Mexico, as well as a production line in Belvidere, N.J.

BASF, based in Germany, will continue to supply products from those three locations for 11 to 12 months, after which it will close the Decatur facility and the Belvidere facility's Plastisol line.

That production will transfer to PPG's Springdale, Pa. plant, the company said.

PPG shares rose $1.19, or 2 percent, to $60.93 in morning trading.
