Pilgrim's Pride Cuts More Jobs At Arkansas Plant

Chicken processor says another 100 positions will be cut at its El Dorado operation, in addition to the 600 already eliminated.

EL DORADO, Ark. (AP) -- Pilgrim's Pride Corp. says another 100 positions will be cut at its El Dorado operation, in addition to the 600 already eliminated.

The company said Monday the 100 positions are on the eviscerating line at its chicken processing plant. The cuts will be effective Nov. 21.

Pilgrim's Pride spokesman Ray Atkinson says the Pittsburg, Texas-based company laid off 450 El Dorado workers and left open 150 positions to eliminate the 600 positions.

Pilgrim's is consolidating the tray-pack chicken portion, or back-end operations, of the El Dorado plant as part of an overall plan to improve efficiencies.

Like Springdale-based Tyson Foods, Pilgrim's Pride has seen its costs soar with high prices for fuel and feed. Atkinson said the cuts were needed to help restore the company to profitabilty.
