GIBBON, Neb.(AP) -- Officials with Nebraska's only turkey processing plant in Gibbon cite increasing costs, primarily feed and fuel, for a decision to shut down the plant.
Plant operations at the Nebraska Turkey Growers Cooperative will continue into December, then a usual three-week shutdown for maintenance and renovations will be extended indefinitely.
Turkey Growers Chairman Bill Bevans says they hope to be back in operation in late spring, but the future is "still unknown."
The plant has 225 full-time employees and processes more than 20,000 turkeys a day. It's Gibbon's second employer behind Gibbon Packing Inc.
