Mattel Asks Judge To Halt Bratz Production

Barbie-maker filed court papers Monday asking a federal judge to block its competitor MGA Entertainment Inc. from making or selling Bratz dolls.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) -- Barbie-maker Mattel Inc. filed court papers Monday asking a federal judge to block its competitor MGA Entertainment Inc. from making or selling Bratz dolls.

Attorneys for Mattel filed the papers in U.S. District Court just over a month after a jury awarded the El Segundo-based company $100 million in damages in the fight over the pouty-lipped dolls.

Isaac Larian, MGA's chief executive officer, said he was disappointed but not surprised by the filing.

"I am happy to compete with (Mattel) in the marketplace," he said. "I had hoped they would take the challenge and do the same."

The federal jury found that the designer of the Bratz line conceived the idea while working for Mattel. Sales of Mattel's Barbie have slid since Bratz dolls came on the scene seven years ago.

Judge Stephen Larson will hear arguments on the injunction request Nov. 10.
