Life Sciences Companies Expanding In Massachusetts

Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics, Advance Medical Inc., and Covidien are all planning to expand operations in Massachusetts.

BOSTON (AP) -- The life sciences industry in Massachusetts is getting a major boost with three companies expanding operations in the state.

Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics plans to unveil a $109 million expansion in Walpole next week, while Advance Medical Inc. is establishing a new U.S. headquarters in Boston. Covidien Ltd. is considering building near corporate headquarters in Mansfield.

Greg Bialecki, the state's undersecretary of business development, said officials are "obviously excited" by the news.

Siemens Healthcare, a unit of Siemens AG of Germany, has scheduled a ribbon-cutting on Monday. The company says it has added 115,000 square feet to its manufacturing plant and plans to add 70 jobs over 10 years.

Michael Hough, executive vice president of Advance Medical, says the company was drawn to Boston by its famous hospitals and research facilities.
