July Semiconductor Chip Sales Up 7.6 Percent

Semiconductor chip sales totaled $22.2 billion in July, up 7.6 percent from $20.6 billion in July of last year, the Semiconductor Industry Association reported Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Semiconductor chip sales totaled $22.2 billion in July, up 7.6 percent from $20.6 billion in July of last year and up 2.8 percent from $21.6 billion in June, the Semiconductor Industry Association reported Tuesday.

Worldwide semiconductor sales for the year through the end of July were $148.3 billion, up 5 percent from the same period of 2007, the SIA said.

SIA president George Scalise attributed the healthy year-over-year sales increase to growth in sales of consumer electronics, personal computers and cell phones, which account for about 80 percent of chip demand. Much of that growth, he said, is being driven by robust demand for liquid crystal displays for television sets, digital set-top boxes and digital still cameras, as well as steady demand for personal computers and cell phones.

The SIA said sales of memory chips -- including dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips used in personal computers and NAND flash memory chips used in cell phones, digital cameras and other portable devices -- continued to fall in July due to continued pricing erosion.

Excluding memory chip sales, the group said, total semiconductor sales in July rose 11.6 percent year over year.

The Semiconductor Industry Association represents a cross-section of the semiconductor sector, including industry leaders Intel Corp., Advanced Micro Devices Inc., LSI Corp. and Micron Technology Inc.
