MILPITAS, Calif. (AP) -- High-speed integrated circuit maker Intersil Corp. said Tuesday it is acquiring Kenet Inc., which designs chips for the conversion of analog to digital signals, for an undisclosed amount.
Milpitas, Calif.-based Intersil said the deal will strengthen its product lineup by folding in a company whose products are also focused on low-power applications. Kenet is based in Woburn, Mass.
Analog-to-digital converters are used to transform analog signals, like sound waves, into a digital form that computers can understand. The chips are widely used in cell phones, music-recording equipment and electronic testing equipment.
Intersil said the acquisition is expected to close "within days" and that Intersil may record a one-time charge for the deal, but the amount hasn't been determined yet.
Intersil said the acquisition adds an additional $2 million in operating expenses per quarter onto its books. The deal is expected to add to Intersil's earnings in 2010.
Intersil shares gained 42 cents, 2.7 percent, to $16.16 in morning trading.
