GE Healthcare Buys MicroCal LLC

General Electric unit bought instrument maker MicroCal for an undisclosed amount, a move GE said will bolster its drug discovery technology offerings.

NEW YORK (AP) -- GE Healthcare said Tuesday it bought instrument maker MicroCal LLC for an undisclosed amount, a move the company said will bolster its drug discovery technology offerings.

The General Electric Co. unit said MicroCal makes measuring devices that provide information on the structure, function and properties of proteins, antibodies and other molecules. GE said the Northampton, Mass., company's technology can provide information during drug discovery that reduces the chances of costly late-stage trial failures.

It said MicroCal's products complement the products made by the Biacore business.

In morning trading, shares of Fairfield, Conn.-based GE rose 97 cents, or 4.2 percent, to $24.07, as the markets recovered some of Monday's losses.
