TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Dell Japan Inc., the Japanese unit of Dell Inc., said Tuesday it has found 13 cases where its desktop computers sold in Japan have emitted a limited amount of smoke due to possible defects in the power supply unit.
Although there have been no reports of injuries or damage, the company will replace the power supply units free of charge if they are found to be defective. The affected products are 60,000 units of Dell Dimension 2400c desktop computers, shipped between May 2003 and August 2004, and 87,000 units of Dimension 4600c desktop computers, shipped between May 2003 and November 2004.
Dell said when the power supply unit malfunctions, the system shuts down until the supply unit is replaced.
Of the 13 cases, the company has already reported nine cases, which happened in seven prefectures including Tokyo, to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The other four cases are under preparation for report to the ministry.
