Fiber yarn plant in Georgia has announced it will lay off 250 workers and shut down next month.

BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (AP) -- Bainbridge-based American Fibers and Yards has announced it will lay off 250 workers and shut down its plant next month.

Employees were informed about the closing on Wednesday, a day after the company filed for bankruptcy protection.

Company officials said the plant will cease operations on Oct. 15.

The Georgia Department of Labor said employees may qualify for unemployment benefits and job training assistance.
